The Mist Closes Behind Her

On her last afternoon, Polly climbed high above the coast one more time, above the tea terraces, the crater with its two lakes, and the quiet forest where the priolo still calls from deep in the laurel trees. From up there the island looked exactly like what it is: one long chain of old volcanoes, still faintly warm, still slowly cooling into green.

Na sua última tarde, Polly subiu mais uma vez bem alto acima da costa, por cima dos socalcos de chá, da cratera com as suas duas lagoas e da floresta silenciosa onde o priolo ainda canta lá no fundo dos loureiros. Vista dali de cima, a ilha parecia exatamente aquilo que é: uma longa cadeia de vulcões antigos, ainda ligeiramente quentes, ainda a arrefecer devagar até ficarem verdes.

Fishing boats were heading back into the harbor below, small white shapes trailing thin wakes across a darkening sea, and lights were coming on one by one along the coast road. The smell of woodsmoke drifted up from somewhere near the shore, mixing with the last of the salt air.

Os barcos de pesca regressavam ao porto lá em baixo, pequenas formas brancas a deixar rastos finos sobre um mar cada vez mais escuro, e as luzes acendiam-se uma a uma ao longo da estrada da costa. O cheiro a fumo de lenha subia de algum lugar perto da praia, misturando-se com os últimos restos de ar salgado.

A bank of fog rolled in off the ocean the way it had all week, sliding first over the crater, then the tea fields, then the harbor itself, folding the whole island out of sight beneath her. Polly had watched it do this before, patient and unhurried, as if the island preferred to disappear slowly rather than all at once.

Uma massa de nevoeiro entrou do oceano como tinha feito toda a semana, deslizando primeiro sobre a cratera, depois sobre os campos de chá, depois sobre o próprio porto, dobrando a ilha inteira para fora de vista por baixo dela. Polly já a tinha visto fazer isto antes, paciente e sem pressa, como se a ilha preferisse desaparecer devagar em vez de tudo de uma vez.

She turned out over open water while the last of the light held on the horizon, leaving behind an island still cooking its dinner underground, still growing its tea one careful leaf at a time, and still, somewhere deep in an old forest, keeping a small grey bird safe.

Virou para o mar aberto enquanto a última luz ainda se agarrava ao horizonte, deixando para trás uma ilha que continuava a cozinhar o jantar debaixo da terra, a fazer crescer o seu chá uma folha cuidadosa de cada vez e, algures no fundo de uma floresta antiga, a manter em segurança uma pequena ave cinzenta.
