Dinner Buried at Dawn

Near a small lake covered in steam, Polly found a row of big pots next to deep holes in the black ground. A cook in a thick apron lowered a sealed pot into each hole using a rope. Polly landed nearby to watch, curious what could be worth cooking in a hole in the ground.

Lângă un lac mic acoperit de aburi, Polly a găsit un șir de oale mari lângă gropi adânci săpate în pământul negru. Un bucătar cu șorț gros cobora cu o funie câte o oală sigilată în fiecare groapă. Polly s-a așezat aproape ca să privească, curioasă ce merită gătit într-o groapă din pământ.

Each pot was full of meat, sausage, cabbage, and vegetables. The holes are heated from below by the volcano, to about the same heat as boiling water. No fire is used at all. The heat comes only from deep underground, through cracks marked with stone rings long ago.

Fiecare oală era plină cu carne, cârnați, varză și legume. Gropile sunt încălzite de dedesubt de vulcan, cam la fel de tare ca apa care fierbe. Nu se folosește deloc foc. Căldura vine doar din adânc, prin crăpături însemnate demult cu inele de piatră.

The cook showed Polly, mostly with his hands, that the pots stay buried for six or seven hours. People go visit the lake or the town while they wait. Then they come back to dig up their dinner.

Bucătarul i-a arătat lui Polly, mai ales cu mâinile, că oalele stau îngropate șase sau șapte ore. Oamenii merg între timp să vadă lacul sau orașul. Apoi se întorc ca să își dezgroape cina.

When the first pot came out, thick steam rose up, and the smell of cooked meat filled the air. Polly did not stay to eat, but she watched the cook carry the pot away, proud of a meal the mountain had cooked.

Când a ieșit prima oală, s-a ridicat un abur gros, iar mirosul de carne gătită a umplut aerul. Polly nu a rămas să mănânce, dar l-a privit pe bucătar ducând oala, mândru de o masă pe care o gătise muntele.
