One Crater, Two Colors

From high above the interior, Polly looked down into a single enormous crater, more than twenty-two thousand years old and wide enough to hold a small town, two lakes, and several farms inside its rim. A thin strip of land crossed the middle, and on either side of it the water was a completely different color, one lake a deep blue, the other a vivid green, as if someone had poured two different oceans into the same bowl.

Bem alto sobre o interior, Polly olhou para dentro de uma única cratera enorme, com mais de vinte e dois mil anos e larga o suficiente para conter uma pequena vila, duas lagoas e várias quintas dentro do seu bordo. Uma faixa estreita de terra atravessava o meio e, de cada lado dela, a água tinha uma cor completamente diferente, uma lagoa de um azul profundo, a outra de um verde vivo, como se alguém tivesse despejado dois oceanos diferentes na mesma taça.

The two lakes are not really separate. A narrow channel under the land bridge connects them, so the water itself is one body. What changes is everything around it. The blue lake is deeper and simply reflects the open sky, while the green lake sits closer to plant-covered slopes and tiny algae, both of which tint its water a rich green instead.

As duas lagoas não estão realmente separadas. Um canal estreito por baixo da faixa de terra liga-as, por isso a água é toda um só corpo. O que muda é tudo o que está à volta. A lagoa azul é mais funda e limita-se a refletir o céu aberto, enquanto a lagoa verde fica mais perto de encostas cobertas de vegetação e de algas minúsculas, que lhe tingem a água de um verde intenso.

Polly flew low along the land bridge that splits the two colors, close enough to see fishing boats resting on one shore and grazing cattle on the low hills above the other. Thick fog rolled in off the ocean and settled inside the crater rim, hiding first the green lake, then the blue, until only the bridge between them stayed visible.

Polly voou baixo ao longo da faixa de terra que separa as duas cores, perto o suficiente para ver barcos de pesca pousados numa margem e gado a pastar nas colinas baixas acima da outra. Um nevoeiro espesso entrou do oceano e assentou dentro do bordo da cratera, escondendo primeiro a lagoa verde, depois a azul, até só a faixa entre elas continuar visível.

She perched on the old stone wall of a lookout point and waited for the fog to lift again, in no hurry at all. When it finally thinned, both lakes reappeared at once, blue and green, exactly where she had left them.

Empoleirou-se no velho muro de pedra de um miradouro e esperou que o nevoeiro voltasse a levantar, sem pressa nenhuma. Quando finalmente se desfez, as duas lagoas reapareceram ao mesmo tempo, azul e verde, exatamente onde as tinha deixado.
