The Circle and the Morning Boat

The Ring of Brodgar sits on a narrow neck of land between two lochs, which is the only reason it feels high. The stones stand in a circle about one hundred and four metres across, cut off from the moor by a ditch hacked into solid rock. It was raised between four and four and a half thousand years ago, and it is part of a world heritage site.

O Anel de Brodgar fica num istmo estreito entre dois lagos, e é essa a única razão por que parece alto. As pedras formam um círculo com cerca de cento e quatro metros de diâmetro, separado da charneca por um fosso escavado na rocha maciça. Foi erguido há quatro mil a quatro mil e quinhentos anos, e faz parte de um sítio património mundial.

There were around sixty stones once. Thirty-six are standing now, and the gaps are as much of the shape as the stones are. Polly walked the ring the long way, on the outside, with heather to her knees and the light going flat and wide across the water on both sides. Nothing about it is arranged for a visitor. It was arranged for something else, and whatever that was is not recorded anywhere.

Houve cerca de sessenta pedras. Hoje estão de pé trinta e seis, e os vazios fazem tanta parte da forma como as pedras. Polly deu a volta ao anel pelo caminho mais longo, por fora, com urze pelos joelhos e a luz a espalhar-se baixa e larga sobre a água dos dois lados. Nada ali está disposto para um visitante. Estava disposto para outra coisa, e essa outra coisa não está registada em lado nenhum.

Then the ordinary business of leaving. Back at the harbour office there was a shag behind a counter and a printed sheet on the wall. "What time does the ferry leave?" Polly asked. "How much does this cost?" She looked at the sheet with him while he found the line. "I would like to buy a ticket, please."

Depois veio o assunto banal de partir. De volta ao escritório do porto havia um corvo-marinho atrás de um balcão e uma folha impressa na parede. "A que horas parte o ferry?", perguntou Polly. "Quanto custa isto?" Olhou para a folha com ele enquanto ele procurava a linha. "Queria comprar um bilhete, por favor."

"How long does the crossing take?" she asked last, and put the ticket away. In the morning the boat pulled out past the same low headland it had come in by, and the islands went down behind it in the order she had learned them: a town on one street, a bay with a village in it, a chapel made of huts, a rock full of seals, and inland, out of sight from the water, a circle with most of its stones still up.

"Quanto tempo demora a travessia?", perguntou por fim, e guardou o bilhete. De manhã, o barco saiu ao largo do mesmo promontório baixo por onde tinha entrado, e as ilhas foram ficando para trás pela ordem em que ela as tinha aprendido: uma vila de uma só rua, uma baía com uma aldeia dentro, uma capela feita de barracões, um rochedo cheio de focas e, terra adentro, fora do alcance da vista de quem vai no mar, um círculo com quase todas as pedras ainda de pé.
