Built From What They Had

The chapel on Lamb Holm is two army huts end to end, which is the first thing anyone notices and the last thing anyone remembers. A caretaker was unlocking it when Polly arrived, an unhurried man with a ring of keys. "What is your job?" she asked him, and he said he opened the doors in the morning, closed them at night, and repainted what the salt air took off in between.

A capela de Lamb Holm são dois barracões do exército encostados um ao outro, que é a primeira coisa que toda a gente repara e a última de que alguém se lembra. Um zelador estava a abri-la quando Polly chegou, um homem sem pressa com um molho de chaves. "Qual é o seu trabalho?", perguntou-lhe ela, e ele disse que abria as portas de manhã, fechava-as à noite e, pelo meio, repintava o que o ar salgado ia comendo.

Inside, the huts disappear. Italian prisoners of war were brought here in the nineteen forties to work on the sea barriers, and they asked for somewhere to worship. What they got was corrugated metal. What they made of it was a vaulted ceiling, a stone chancel, a wrought iron screen and a painted altarpiece, and one of them, a painter named Domenico Chiocchetti, led the work.

Lá dentro, os barracões desaparecem. Prisioneiros de guerra italianos foram trazidos para aqui nos anos quarenta para trabalhar nas barreiras marítimas, e pediram um sítio onde rezar. O que lhes deram foi chapa ondulada. O que fizeram com ela foi um teto em abóbada, uma capela-mor de pedra, uma grade de ferro forjado e um retábulo pintado, e um deles, um pintor chamado Domenico Chiocchetti, dirigiu o trabalho.

"What do you need to complete the work?" is the question the camp had to answer. They asked for cement, and were given cement. Everything else came out of what the camp was throwing away. The screen is scrap iron worked cold. The candle holders are corned beef tins. The stone of the chancel is plasterboard, painted so carefully that you have to lean in before it admits what it is.

"De que precisa para terminar o trabalho?" é a pergunta a que o campo teve de responder. Pediram cimento, e deram-lhes cimento. Tudo o resto saiu daquilo que o campo deitava fora. A grade é ferro velho trabalhado a frio. Os castiçais são latas de carne. A pedra da capela-mor é placa de gesso, pintada com tanto cuidado que é preciso chegar perto para ela confessar o que é.

The caretaker had left a small hand tool on the sill. "Could you show me how to use this tool?" Polly asked, and he did, and the explanation went past her the first time. "Could you explain that again?" He did that too. Then he went back to his paint, and Polly looked up at a ceiling that is flat metal pretending to be a curve, and holds the pretence from every seat in the room.

O zelador tinha deixado uma pequena ferramenta no parapeito. "Pode mostrar-me como se usa esta ferramenta?", perguntou Polly, e ele mostrou, e à primeira a explicação passou-lhe ao lado. "Pode explicar outra vez?" Ele também fez isso. Depois voltou para a tinta, e Polly olhou para cima, para um teto de chapa lisa que finge ser uma curva e mantém o fingimento a partir de qualquer lugar da sala.
