Nine Islands, Three Plates

Polly came in low over black volcanic rock, where green fields ran to the cliff edge and mist slid across rounded hills inland. This was São Miguel, the largest of the nine Azores islands, alone in the North Atlantic. Salt air mixed with wet earth and cut grass.

Polly letěla nízko nad černou sopečnou skálou, kde zelená pole sahala až k okraji útesu a nad zaoblenými kopci ve vnitrozemí se táhla mlha. Tohle byl São Miguel, největší z devíti azorských ostrovů, sám v severním Atlantiku. Slaný vzduch se mísil s vůní mokré hlíny a posečené trávy.

The island exists because of a seam far below the ocean floor, where three great plates grind slowly against each other. North America pulls one way, Europe another, and Africa presses from the south. Heat rises through the cracks where they meet. Every island here was built from fire and cooling rock.

Ostrov existuje díky švu hluboko pod dnem oceánu, kde se o sebe pomalu třou tři velké desky. Severní Amerika táhne jedním směrem, Evropa druhým a Afrika tlačí od jihu. Tam, kde se setkávají, stoupá puklinami žár. Každý zdejší ostrov vznikl z ohně a chladnoucí horniny.

Almost every field on São Miguel is edged by a hedge of hydrangeas, blue, violet, and sometimes soft pink, so thick they look painted onto the land. Farmers brought the plants from Asia in the nineteenth century just to mark field borders. The volcanic soil, rich in minerals, turns their petals an even deeper blue.

Téměř každé pole na São Miguel lemuje živý plot z hortenzií, modrých, fialových a někdy jemně růžových, tak hustých, že vypadají jako namalované do krajiny. Sedláci přivezli tyto rostliny z Asie v devatenáctém století jen proto, aby vyznačili hranice polí. Sopečná půda, bohatá na minerály, dělá jejich okvětní lístky ještě modřejší.

Further inland, green hills folded around quiet basins Polly could not see from the coast. Steam rose faintly from somewhere among them, thin white threads against the grey sky, and she turned toward the high ground.

Dál ve vnitrozemí se zelené kopce skládaly kolem tichých pánví, které Polly z pobřeží neviděla. Odněkud mezi nimi slabě stoupala pára, tenké bílé nitky proti šedé obloze, a Polly zamířila k výšinám.
