La città sull'orlo

Prima arriva il vento. Polly vola verso sud lungo la costa della Corsica, finché l'isola finisce. Davanti a lei c'è il mare aperto e, molto lontano, un'altra isola, bassa e azzurra. È la Sardegna. L'acqua tra le due isole si chiama Bocche di Bonifacio, e lì il vento soffia forte.

The wind comes first. Polly flies south along the coast of Corsica until the island ends. In front of her there is open water, and far away another island, low and blue. That is Sardinia. The water between them is called the Strait of Bonifacio, and the wind blows hard through it.

Si gira e vede la città. Sta su una scogliera bianca, proprio sul bordo. Le case sono alte e strette, con le persiane chiuse. Poi Polly nota una cosa strana. Alla base dei muri non c'è spazio. La pietra delle case entra dritta nella pietra della scogliera. E la scogliera scende per circa settanta metri fino al mare.

She turns back and sees the town. It stands on a white cliff, right at the edge. The houses are tall and narrow, with closed shutters. Then Polly notices something strange. There is no space at the bottom of the walls. The stone of the houses goes straight into the stone of the cliff. And the cliff falls about seventy meters down to the sea.

Polly si posa sulle vecchie mura della città e guarda giù. La roccia è pallida e secca. Molto più in basso, i gabbiani volano in cerchio. Poi vede un'altra cosa strana. Qualcuno ha tagliato una linea stretta nella scogliera, e dentro ci sono dei gradini.

Polly lands on the old town wall and looks down. The rock is pale and dry. Gulls fly in circles far below her. Then she sees something strange. Someone has cut a narrow line into the cliff, and inside it there are steps.

Prova a contarli, ma la luce sta andando via. I gradini scendono e scendono, fino nell'ombra. Sotto, il mare si muove contro la roccia. Polly pensa: io scendo laggiù.

She tries to count them, but the light is going. The steps go down and down into shadow. The sea moves against the rock below. Polly thinks: I am going down there.
