벼랑 끝에 선 도시

바람이 먼저 불어와요. 폴리는 코르시카 해안을 따라 남쪽으로 날아가요. 그러다 섬이 끝나요. 앞에는 넓은 바다가 있고, 멀리 낮고 파란 섬이 하나 더 보여요. 그 섬은 사르데냐예요. 두 섬 사이의 바다는 보니파시오 해협이라고 하는데, 그곳에는 바람이 아주 세게 불어요.

The wind comes first. Polly flies south along the coast of Corsica until the island ends. In front of her there is open water, and far away another island, low and blue. That is Sardinia. The water between them is called the Strait of Bonifacio, and the wind blows hard through it.

폴리는 뒤를 돌아보다가 도시를 봐요. 도시는 하얀 절벽 위, 바로 끝에 서 있어요. 집들은 높고 좁고, 덧창은 닫혀 있어요. 그때 폴리는 이상한 점을 발견해요. 벽 아래에 빈틈이 하나도 없어요. 집의 돌이 절벽의 돌과 그대로 이어져 있어요. 그리고 절벽은 바다까지 칠십 미터쯤 떨어져요.

She turns back and sees the town. It stands on a white cliff, right at the edge. The houses are tall and narrow, with closed shutters. Then Polly notices something strange. There is no space at the bottom of the walls. The stone of the houses goes straight into the stone of the cliff. And the cliff falls about seventy meters down to the sea.

폴리는 오래된 성벽에 내려앉아 아래를 봐요. 바위는 하얗고 말라 있어요. 저 아래에서 갈매기들이 빙빙 날아요. 그때 폴리는 이상한 것을 봐요. 누군가 절벽에 좁은 줄을 파 놓았고, 그 안에 계단이 있어요.

Polly lands on the old town wall and looks down. The rock is pale and dry. Gulls fly in circles far below her. Then she sees something strange. Someone has cut a narrow line into the cliff, and inside it there are steps.

폴리는 계단을 세어 보려고 하지만, 날이 어두워지고 있어요. 계단은 그림자 속으로 계속 내려가요. 아래에서는 바다가 바위에 부딪혀요. 폴리는 생각해요. 저 아래로 내려가 봐야지.

She tries to count them, but the light is going. The steps go down and down into shadow. The sea moves against the rock below. Polly thinks: I am going down there.
