離れていった岩

ポリーはもっと下へ降りて、おとなりさんに出会います。海の中の、わりと近いところに、白っぽい岩の高い塔が立っています。その下のほうで、白い波がくだけています。人々はその岩を「砂粒」とよびます。これはじょうだんです。岩は小さな教会ぐらい大きいのです。

Further down still, Polly goes down and meets a neighbour. Out in the water, quite close, there is a tall tower of pale rock. White waves break around the bottom of it. People call it the Grain of Sand. That is a joke, because it is about as big as a small church.

この岩は、昔からそこにあったわけではありません。八百年ぐらい前は、この崖の一部でした。でも波が下の岩を持っていって、塔は海の中にひとりで残されました。ポリーは岩を見ます。岩は上より下のほうが細いです。海は今も岩をけずっています。

It was not always out there. About eight hundred years ago it was part of this cliff. Then the waves took away the rock underneath, and the tower was left alone in the sea. Polly looks at it. It is thinner at the bottom than at the top. The sea is still working on it.

一羽のカモメが、ポリーのそばを飛んでいきます。このカモメは特別です。船について行って人の食べ物をとる、うるさいカモメではありません。アカハシカモメです。このカモメは、ほかの動物から食べ物をとりません。沖で自分で魚をとります。

A gull flies past her. This one is special. It is not one of the noisy gulls that follow boats and take food from people. This is an Audouin's gull. It never takes food from other animals. It catches its own fish out at sea.

カモメは海の上を遠くへ飛んでいき、ポリーにはもう見えなくなります。ポリーは、高い岩と、岩と崖のあいだのすき間を、もう一度見ます。そのすき間も、昔はかたい石でした。

The gull flies away over the water until Polly cannot see it. She looks again at the tall rock, and at the space between it and the cliff. That space was once solid stone.
