नमक का एक दाना

अपनी आख़िरी सुबह पॉली कस्बे के आख़िरी छोर तक उड़ी। वहाँ समुद्र के पास, एक गोल गिरजाघर के बगल में, एक छोटा सफ़ेद प्रकाशस्तंभ है। यहाँ से कस्बा फिर से एक जहाज़ जैसा दिखा।

On her last morning, Polly flew to the end of the town. A small white lighthouse stands there by the sea, next to a round church. From here, the town looked like a ship again.

मछली पकड़ने वाली नावें एक एक करके बंदरगाह से निकलीं। घंटाघर का घंटा छतों के ऊपर बजा। चौक में वायलिन वाला आदमी पहली रोशनी में अकेला खड़ा था।

The fishing boats left the harbour one by one. The bell in the tower rang over the roofs. On the square, the man with the violin stood alone in the first light.

पॉली को अब भी नमक के एक दाने का स्वाद आ रहा था। समुद्र, सूरज और धैर्य भरे हाथों ने उसे बनाया, सात सौ साल से भी ज़्यादा समय से एक ही तरीक़े से। नमक ने यह सफ़ेद कस्बा बनाया।

Polly still tasted one grain of salt. Sea, sun and patient hands made it, the same way for more than seven hundred years. Salt built this white town.

उसने कस्बे का एक चक्कर लगाया। फिर वह सुबह की हवा पर ऊपर उठ गई। पत्थर का जहाज़ उसके पीछे छोटा हो गया। उसके सामने समुद्र चौड़ा और चमकीला था।

She flew once around the town. Then she rose on the morning wind. The stone ship grew small behind her. The sea in front of her was wide and bright.
