The Village Under the Storm

Polly had one place written down. "Can you tell me how to get there?" she asked the ewe at breakfast. Follow the coast road west, the ewe said. The Bay of Skaill is a long curve of pale sand. Behind it is a green shelf, and the village sits there, half sunk into the ground.

폴리에게는 적어 둔 장소가 하나 있었다. "거기 어떻게 가는지 알려 주시겠어요?" 아침을 먹으며 암양에게 물었다. 해안 도로를 따라 서쪽으로 가라고 암양이 말했다. 스카일 만은 창백한 모래가 길게 휘어진 곳이다. 그 뒤에는 초록빛 단이 있고, 마을은 그 위에 땅속에 반쯤 잠긴 채 앉아 있다.

An oystercatcher was working the site. Polly asked, "I would like to know the history of this particular monument." People lived here five thousand years ago, he said. They farmed this coast before Stonehenge and before the Great Pyramid. Then sand covered the village for four thousand years, until a storm in eighteen fifty took it away.

The wind took half of that. "Could you please repeat that for me?" Polly asked. Every house has the same furniture in the same places. A hearth in the middle. Beds at each side. A stone dresser against the far wall. It is stone because there was no wood.

"Could you tell me if the museum is open tomorrow?" Polly asked. She knew she would come back. She stood at the edge of one house, looking into a room laid out the way anyone lays out a room.

"박물관이 내일 문을 여는지 알려 주시겠어요?" 폴리가 물었다. 다시 오게 되리라는 것을 알고 있었다. 폴리는 집 한 채의 가장자리에 서서, 누구나 방을 꾸미는 방식 그대로 꾸며진 방을 들여다보았다.
