머리 위로 기울어진 절벽

꽤 아래까지 내려왔을 무렵, 폴리는 하늘에 이상한 일이 생겼다는 것을 알아차린다. 하늘이 줄어들었다. 고개를 들어 보니 절벽이 머리 위로 툭 튀어나와 매달려 있다. 이 아래보다 저 위가 더 넓어서, 꼭대기의 도시는 뒤쪽 위 어딘가에 완전히 가려 보이지 않는다.

By the time she has gone far enough down, Polly notices that something strange has happened to the sky. There is less of it. She looks up and finds the cliff hanging out over her head, wider up there than it is down here, so that the town at the top is somewhere behind and above and completely out of sight.

바다가 아주 오랫동안 해 온 일이 바로 이것이다. 파도는 절벽 밑동을 끈질기게 파고들어 아래에서부터 바위를 걷어 가고, 위의 바위는 딛고 설 곳을 잃은 채 기다린다. 이 해안을 따라 바다는 절벽 밑동에 동굴들을 깊숙이 파 놓았다. 넓고 어두운 아가리가 너울을 삼켰다가 쿵 하는 울림으로 되돌려 보내는데, 그 울림이 폴리가 앉아 있는 돌계단을 타고 고스란히 전해진다.

This is what the sea has been doing for a very long time. Waves work at the bottom of a cliff and take the rock away from underneath, and the rock above, having nothing left to stand on, waits. Along this coast the sea has cut whole caves back into the base of the cliffs, wide dark mouths that swallow the swell and give it back with a boom she can feel through the step she is sitting on.

아래쪽 바위 턱에는 짙은 초록빛 새들이 날개를 활짝 편 채 바람에 말리고 있다. 유럽가마우지들이다. 이 새들은 이 바위들을 따라 무시 못 할 만큼 많이 산다. 지중해 전체에서 번식하는 유럽가마우지의 절반 가까이가 이 해안과 그 너머의 작은 섬들 주변에 둥지를 튼다.

On the ledges below her there are dark green birds standing with their wings held open, drying them in the wind. They are shags, and they nest along these rocks in numbers that matter. Close to half of all the shags breeding in the whole Mediterranean Sea nest around this stretch of coast and the little islands beyond it.

그중 한 마리가 아무 예고 없이 바위 턱에서 떨어지더니, 몸을 접고 물속으로 들어간다. 너무 깔끔해서 물보라가 거의 일지 않는다. 폴리는 기다린다. 새는 한참이나 보이지 않는다. 다시 떠올랐을 때는 놀랄 만큼 먼 곳이고, 부리에는 물고기가 물려 있다.

One of them drops off its ledge without warning, folds, and goes into the water so cleanly that it barely makes a splash. Polly waits. It is gone a long time. When it surfaces it is a surprising distance away, and it has a fish.
