La scogliera che ti sovrasta

Polly scende ancora. Poi nota una cosa strana. C'è meno cielo di prima. Guarda in alto. La scogliera sporge sopra la sua testa. Lassù è più larga che quaggiù. Adesso la città in cima non si vede più.

Polly goes further down. Then she notices something strange. There is less sky than before. She looks up. The cliff hangs out over her head. It is wider up there than down here. The town at the top is out of sight now.

È stato il mare, piano piano, in tantissimo tempo. Le onde colpiscono la base della scogliera e portano via la roccia. Allora la roccia di sopra non ha più niente sotto. Lungo questa costa il mare ha fatto grandi grotte nelle scogliere. Quando un'onda entra in una grotta, Polly sente il rumore attraverso la pietra sotto le zampe.

The sea did this, slowly, over a very long time. Waves hit the bottom of the cliff and take the rock away. Then the rock above has nothing to stand on. Along this coast the sea has made big caves in the cliffs. When a wave goes into a cave, Polly feels the sound through the stone under her feet.

Sulle sporgenze sotto di lei ci sono degli uccelli verde scuro. Stanno in piedi con le ali spalancate, per asciugarle al vento. Questi uccelli sono marangoni dal ciuffo. Quasi la metà di tutti i marangoni dal ciuffo del Mar Mediterraneo fa il nido lungo questa costa e sulle piccole isole lì davanti.

On the ledges below her there are dark green birds. They stand with their wings wide open to dry them in the wind. These birds are shags. Almost half of all the shags in the whole Mediterranean Sea nest along this coast and on the small islands out there.

All'improvviso uno di loro si lascia cadere dalla sporgenza. Entra in acqua quasi senza schizzi. Polly aspetta. L'uccello resta sott'acqua a lungo. Quando torna su è lontano, e ha un pesce.

Suddenly one of them drops off its ledge. It falls into the water and makes almost no splash. Polly waits. The bird stays under a long time. When it comes up again it is far away, and it has a fish.
