Urwisko, które się nad tobą pochyla

Polly schodzi niżej. Wtedy zauważa coś dziwnego. Nieba jest mniej niż przedtem. Patrzy w górę. Urwisko wisi nad jej głową. Na górze jest szersze niż tu na dole. Miasta na szczycie już nie widać.

Polly goes further down. Then she notices something strange. There is less sky than before. She looks up. The cliff hangs out over her head. It is wider up there than down here. The town at the top is out of sight now.

Zrobiło to morze, powoli, przez bardzo długi czas. Fale uderzają w dół urwiska i zabierają skałę. Potem skała nad nimi nie ma na czym stać. Wzdłuż tego wybrzeża morze zrobiło w klifach duże jaskinie. Kiedy fala wpada do jaskini, Polly czuje ten dźwięk przez kamień pod stopami.

The sea did this, slowly, over a very long time. Waves hit the bottom of the cliff and take the rock away. Then the rock above has nothing to stand on. Along this coast the sea has made big caves in the cliffs. When a wave goes into a cave, Polly feels the sound through the stone under her feet.

Na półkach skalnych pod nią stoją ciemnozielone ptaki. Trzymają szeroko rozłożone skrzydła, żeby wysuszyć je na wietrze. Te ptaki to kormorany czubate. Prawie połowa wszystkich kormoranów czubatych z całego Morza Śródziemnego ma gniazda na tym wybrzeżu i na małych wyspach w pobliżu.

On the ledges below her there are dark green birds. They stand with their wings wide open to dry them in the wind. These birds are shags. Almost half of all the shags in the whole Mediterranean Sea nest along this coast and on the small islands out there.

Nagle jeden z nich spada z półki. Wpada do wody i prawie nie robi plusku. Polly czeka. Ptak długo jest pod wodą. Kiedy znowu się wynurza, jest daleko i ma rybę.

Suddenly one of them drops off its ledge. It falls into the water and makes almost no splash. Polly waits. The bird stays under a long time. When it comes up again it is far away, and it has a fish.
