떠나간 바위

더 아래로 내려가자 폴리는 이웃 하나와 마주친다. 물 위에, 한 번 미끄러지듯 날아가면 닿을 것 같은 거리에, 창백한 바위 탑 하나가 홀로 서 있고 그 발치에서 바다가 하얗게 부서진다. 이름은 모래알이다. 농담 같은 이름인데, 크기가 작은 교회만 하기 때문이다.

Further down still, Polly comes down far enough to meet a neighbor. Standing out in the water, close enough that she feels she could glide to it, is a single tower of pale rock with the sea breaking white around its foot. It is called the Grain of Sand, which is a joke, because it is roughly the size of a small church.

바위가 늘 저기 있었던 것은 아니다. 팔백 년쯤 전만 해도 이 절벽의 일부였다. 붙어 있었고, 평범했다. 그러다 파도가 그 밑에서 해 오던 일을 마침내 끝냈고, 이어 주던 바위가 무너지자 탑은 바다 한가운데 홀로 남았다. 폴리는 한동안 바위를 바라본다. 위보다 아래가 더 가늘다. 바다는 아직도 일하는 중이다.

It has not always been out there. About eight hundred years ago it was part of this cliff, joined on, ordinary. Then the waves finished the job they had been working at underneath it, and the connecting rock went, and the tower was left standing alone in the sea. Polly looks at it for a while. It is thinner at the bottom than at the top. The sea is still working.

갈매기 한 마리가 눈높이로 지나가는데, 이 녀석은 눈여겨볼 만하다. 배를 따라다니며 항구 방파제에서 감자튀김을 훔쳐 먹는 시끄러운 무리가 아니다. 오두앵갈매기다. 이 갈매기는 남이 남긴 것을 뒤지는 법이 없다. 먼바다에 나가 물고기를 사냥해 먹고사는데, 갈매기에게 그건 거의 원칙의 문제라 할 만하다.

A gull comes past at eye level, and this one is worth watching. It is not one of the loud ones that follow boats and steal chips from the harbor wall. This is an Audouin's gull, and it does not scavenge at all. It makes its living out at sea, hunting fish, which for a gull is almost a matter of principle.

갈매기는 빛을 등지고 해협 위로 멀어지다가 이윽고 폴리의 시야에서 사라진다. 폴리는 홀로 선 바위를, 그리고 바위와 절벽 사이의 틈을 다시 바라본다. 저 틈도 한때는 누군가 걸어서 건널 수 있었던 단단한 돌이었다는 생각을 하면서.

It goes out over the strait with the light behind it until Polly loses it. She looks back at the standing rock, and at the gap between it and the cliff, and thinks about how that gap was once solid stone that somebody could have walked across.
