계단과 옛이야기

가까이서 보니 계단은 아까보다 더 험해 보여요. 계단은 아주 가파르게 내려가요. 거의 사다리 같아요. 사실 진짜 계단이라고 하기도 어려워요. 바위에 파 놓은 좁은 줄이에요. 저 아래로 초록색 바다가 보여요. 폴리는 처음 몇 개를 깡충깡충 내려가요. 계단마다 앞의 계단보다 조금 높거나 낮아요.

Up close the steps look worse than before. They go down very steeply, almost like a ladder. It is not really a staircase. It is a narrow line cut into the rock, and far below Polly can see the green sea. She hops down the first few. Every step is a little higher or lower than the last one.

이곳에는 오래된 이야기가 있고, 모두가 그 이야기를 해요. 천사백이십 년에 한 군대가 이 도시를 공격하러 왔어요. 사람들 말로는 병사들이 하룻밤 만에 몰래 이 계단을 전부 절벽에 팠대요. 위에 있는 도시로 올라가서 기습을 하려고요.

There is an old story about this place, and everybody tells it. In the year fourteen twenty, an army came to attack the town. People say the soldiers cut this whole staircase into the cliff in one night, in secret, so they could climb up and surprise the town above.

재미있는 이야기예요. 하지만 아마 사실은 아닐 거예요. 백 년 전에 한 연구자가 이 이야기를 연구했어요. 그는 두 가지를 말했어요. 하룻밤에 단단한 바위에 계단 이백 개를 팔 수는 없어요. 그리고 여기에는 망루가 있었으니까, 아무도 들키지 않고 밤새 일할 수는 없었어요.

It is a good story. But it is probably not true. A researcher studied it a hundred years ago. He said two things. You cannot cut two hundred steps into hard rock in one night. And there were guard towers here, so nobody could work all night without being seen.

폴리는 계단 하나에 앉아요. 아래로 커다란 바닷새가 지나가요. 아주 낮게 날아서 날개가 바다에 닿을 것 같아요. 그런데 날개를 전혀 움직이지 않아요. 진짜 답은 더 아래 어딘가에 있어요.

Polly sits down on a step. Below her a big seabird flies past, so low that its wing almost touches the sea. It does not move its wings at all. The real answer is somewhere further down.
