Bunga Garam

Hari itu panas dan tidak berangin. Menjelang malam, kolam-kolam rata dan sunyi. Polly berdiri di tepi sebuah kolam dan menunggu.

The day was hot and still. In the evening, the pools were flat and quiet. Polly stood at the edge of a pool and waited.

Lalu kristal putih yang tipis tumbuh di atas air. Kristal itu tampak seperti bunga es. Para petani menyebutnya bunga garam. Bunga garam hanya datang pada hari yang tenang dan hangat. Inilah garam yang paling halus.

Then thin white crystals grew on the top of the water. They looked like frost. The workers call them the flower of salt. They come only on calm, warm days. This is the finest salt of all.

Seorang petani datang dengan jaring halus pada bingkai kayu yang panjang. Ia mengangkat bunga-bunga putih itu dengan sangat lembut. Polly duduk di ujung bingkai dan melihat.

A worker came with a fine net on a long wooden frame. He lifted the white flowers very gently. Polly sat on the end of the frame and watched.

Matahari terbenam. Kolam-kolam berubah merah muda dan jingga. Sebutir kristal kecil ada di bulu Polly. Ia mencicipinya. Rasanya seperti laut dan matahari.

The sun went down. The pools turned pink and orange. One tiny crystal sat on Polly's feather. She tasted it. It tasted of the sea and the sun.
