Une machine avait un vrai insecte à l'intérieur. Envoie ça au développeur de ta vie. En mille neuf cent quarante-sept, un des premiers grands ordinateurs du monde a soudain cessé de fonctionner correctement, et personne n'arrivait à trouver le problème.
Des ingénieurs ont fouillé dans l'immense mur d'interrupteurs et de fils de la machine jusqu'à trouver la cause coincée entre deux contacts métalliques : un papillon de nuit mort. Ils l'ont retiré, ont scotché son corps dans leur carnet de bord, et ont écrit à côté une courte note expliquant qu'ils avaient trouvé un véritable insecte dans la machine.
Le mot bug désignait déjà un petit problème dans une machine avant ce jour-là, mais le papillon scotché est quand même devenu célèbre, et il est encore conservé dans un musée. Depuis, résoudre un problème informatique s'appelle debugging, qu'un véritable insecte soit impliqué ou non.
