두 바다 사이의 탑

폴리는 마을로 돌아갔어요. 언덕 위 성당 옆에 높은 종탑이 서 있어요. 베네치아의 유명한 탑을 따라 만든 거예요. 사백 년도 더 전에 지었어요.

Polly went back to town. On the hill stands a tall bell tower next to the church. It is a copy of the famous tower in Venice. It was built more than four hundred years ago.

안에는 나무 계단이 백마흔여섯 개 있어요. 폴리는 계단을 하나하나 깡충깡충 올라갔어요. 꼭대기에 큰 종들이 매달려 있었어요. 바람에서 소금 냄새가 났어요.

Inside there are one hundred and forty-six wooden steps. Polly hopped up every step. At the top hung the big bells. The wind smelled of salt.

발아래에 마을이 보였어요. 주황색 지붕들이 바다까지 이어졌어요. 하얀 광장이 작은 달처럼 빛났어요. 한쪽에는 파란 바다만 있었어요.

The town lay below her. Orange roofs ran down to the sea. The white square shone like a little moon. On one side there was only blue sea.

다른 쪽 멀리에서 염전이 하얗게 빛났어요. 한쪽에는 물, 다른 쪽에는 소금. 갈매기 말이 맞았어요. 이 마을은 소금이 지었어요.

On the other side, far away, the salt pans shone white. Water on one side, salt on the other. The gull was right. Salt built this town.
