もっと下の階段に、ほかにだれかがいます。キツネが下から上がってきます。キツネは物差しとノートを持っています。キツネは段ごとに止まって、高さを測ります。ポリーはよこによけます。

Further down, somebody else is on the steps. A fox comes up from below. She has a ruler and a notebook. She stops at every step and measures it. Polly moves to one side.

この階段は手でつくったものです。同じ段はひとつもありません。高い段があります。とても低い段もあります。

People cut these steps by hand. No two steps are the same. Some are high. Some are very low.

おもしろいことがあります。階段が何段あるか、だれも知りません。ある事務所は百八十七段だと言います。べつの事務所は百八十九段だと言います。どちらも公式です。

Here is the funny part. Nobody knows how many steps there are. One office says one hundred and eighty seven. Another office says one hundred and eighty nine. Both are official.

ポリーは長い石の階段を見下ろします。ポリーは大きいほうの数字を信じることにします。

Polly looks down the long line of stone. She decides to believe the bigger number.
