Mai jos, pe trepte mai e cineva. O vulpe urcă de jos. Are un metru și un carnet. Se oprește la fiecare treaptă și o măsoară. Polly se dă la o parte.

Further down, somebody else is on the steps. A fox comes up from below. She has a ruler and a notebook. She stops at every step and measures it. Polly moves to one side.

Oamenii au tăiat treptele acestea de mână. Nu sunt două trepte la fel. Unele sunt înalte. Altele sunt foarte joase.

People cut these steps by hand. No two steps are the same. Some are high. Some are very low.

Și acum partea amuzantă. Nimeni nu știe câte trepte sunt. Un birou spune o sută optzeci și șapte. Alt birou spune o sută optzeci și nouă. Amândouă sunt oficiale.

Here is the funny part. Nobody knows how many steps there are. One office says one hundred and eighty seven. Another office says one hundred and eighty nine. Both are official.

Polly looks down the long line of stone. She decides to believe the bigger number.
