いちばん下の水

階段の最後の部分は、ちがいます。今、岩はぬれています。暗くて、冷たいです。いちばん下に、小さな洞窟があります。

The last part of the steps is different. The rock is wet now. It is dark and cold. At the bottom there is a small cave.

洞窟の中で、岩から真水が出ています。ポリーは水を飲んでみます。冷たくて、あまいです。海はすぐそこにありますが、この水はしょっぱくありません。

Inside the cave, fresh water comes out of the rock. Polly tastes it. It is cold and sweet. The sea is right there, but this water is not salty.

上の土地に雨がふります。そこの岩は石灰岩です。水は岩の中に入ります。石の中を下りて、ここに出てきます。

Rain falls on the land above. The rock up there is limestone. The water sinks into it. It travels down inside the stone and comes out here.

今、ポリーは階段のことがわかります。兵士たちが一晩でつくったのではありません。修道士たちが何年もかけて、ゆっくりつくりました。修道士たちは、この水がほしかったのです。

Now Polly understands the steps. Soldiers did not make them in one night. Monks made them, slowly, for many years. They wanted this water.
