Água lá no fundo

A última parte dos degraus é diferente. Agora a rocha está molhada. Está escura e fria. Lá no fundo há uma pequena gruta.

The last part of the steps is different. The rock is wet now. It is dark and cold. At the bottom there is a small cave.

Dentro da gruta, sai água doce da rocha. Polly prova a água. É fria e doce. O mar está ali ao lado, mas esta água não é salgada.

Inside the cave, fresh water comes out of the rock. Polly tastes it. It is cold and sweet. The sea is right there, but this water is not salty.

A chuva cai na terra lá em cima. A rocha lá em cima é calcário. A água entra na rocha. Desce por dentro da pedra e sai aqui.

Rain falls on the land above. The rock up there is limestone. The water sinks into it. It travels down inside the stone and comes out here.

Agora Polly entende os degraus. Os soldados não os fizeram numa noite. Foram monges que os fizeram, devagar, durante muitos anos. Eles queriam esta água.

Now Polly understands the steps. Soldiers did not make them in one night. Monks made them, slowly, for many years. They wanted this water.
