The Shrimp With a Sun Inside Its Claw

This shrimp is far more dangerous than its size would ever suggest. In warm, shallow coastal seas lives a creature scarcely the length of a finger, one oversized claw cocked and held ready like a loaded spring, waiting for its moment.

Questo gamberetto è molto più pericoloso di quanto la sua taglia lascerebbe mai immaginare. Nei mari costieri caldi e poco profondi vive una creatura lunga a malapena quanto un dito, con una chela sovradimensionata tenuta pronta come una molla carica, in attesa del momento giusto.

When the shrimp snaps that claw shut, it happens with such velocity that the strike itself is almost beside the point. The motion creates a bubble in the surrounding water that collapses almost instantly, and for a mere fraction of a second, the interior of that collapsing bubble reaches a temperature approaching that of the sun's own surface. The sound alone exceeds the volume of a gunshot, loud enough on its own to stun or kill small fish nearby.

Quando il gamberetto scatta quella chela, lo fa con una velocità tale che il colpo in sé diventa quasi secondario. Il movimento genera nell'acqua circostante una bolla che collassa quasi all'istante, e per una minuscola frazione di secondo l'interno di quella bolla in collasso raggiunge una temperatura prossima a quella della superficie del sole. Il solo suono supera il volume di uno sparo, abbastanza forte da stordire o uccidere da solo i pesci piccoli nelle vicinanze.

Nothing about the shrimp itself grows hot in the process. The heat and the sound both originate in the bubble, and both vanish again before either could be felt by anything nearby. Divers working near coral reefs often hear the snap of that claw before they spot a single shrimp among the coral.

Nel processo, nulla del gamberetto in sé si scalda. Il calore e il suono nascono entrambi nella bolla, ed entrambi svaniscono di nuovo prima che qualcosa nelle vicinanze possa percepirli. I subacquei che lavorano vicino alle barriere coralline sentono spesso lo scatto di quella chela ben prima di avvistare un solo gamberetto tra i coralli.
