The Last Two Gardens in Europe

On a green hill by the sea, rows of tea plants grew in neat lines. Polly landed on a wall and looked at the plants. This is one of only two tea farms left in all of Europe.

Na zeleném kopci u moře rostly řady čajovníků v úhledných liniích. Polly přistála na zídce a dívala se na rostliny. Tohle je jedna ze dvou posledních čajových farem v celé Evropě.

The farm started in eighteen eighty-three. Before that, the island grew oranges. A disease killed the orange trees. So the growers planted tea instead. They still use the same old machines today.

Farma začala roku osmnáct set osmdesát tři. Předtím ostrov pěstoval pomeranče. Nemoc pomerančovníky zabila. Pěstitelé proto zasadili čaj. Dodnes používají stejné staré stroje.

Inside the factory, old machines roll and dry the leaves. Workers pick the young leaves by hand. Young leaves make the best tea. No bad chemicals are used here.

V továrně staré stroje rolují a suší listy. Dělníci trhají mladé lístky ručně. Mladé lístky dávají nejlepší čaj. Nepoužívají se tu žádné chemikálie.

Polly walked by the tea plants. They smelled like fresh grass. One line of growers has cared for this hill for a very long time.

Polly šla podél čajovníků. Voněly jako čerstvá tráva. Jedna rodina pěstitelů se o tento kopec stará už velmi dlouho.
