잠든 사이 움직이는 호텔

어느 나라에서 잠들었다가 다른 나라에서 깨어나는 호텔이 있다. 바로 야간열차이며, 유럽에는 이런 열차가 가득하다. 저녁에 대도시 역에서 열차에 올라, 접이식 침대와 작은 사다리가 딸린 좁은 객실을 찾아 자리를 잡으면, 자정 무렵 플랫폼이 뒤로 스르르 사라진다. 비행기 대신 이 열차를 함께 타 보자고 친구에게 말해봐.

There is a hotel where you fall asleep in one country and wake up in another. It is called a night train, and Europe is full of them. You board in the evening at a big city station, find your tiny cabin with its fold down bed and its little ladder, and somewhere around midnight the platform slides away behind you. Dare a friend to try this with you instead of a flight.

그 장면을 상상해 보자. 신발은 침대 밑에 있고, 표는 베개 옆 주머니에 꽂혀 있으며, 객실 전체가 배처럼 부드럽게 흔들린다. 커튼 틈으로 밤의 조각들이 스쳐 지나간다. 불 켜진 농가, 너무 빨리 지나가 읽을 수 없는 역 이름, 산의 검은 어깨선. 어느 순간 국경 하나가 몸 아래를 지나가지만, 그동안 사람들은 그저 곤히 잠들어 있다.

Picture the scene. Your shoes are under the bed, your ticket is tucked into the pocket by the pillow, and the whole room rocks gently like a boat. Through the gap in the curtain you catch pieces of the night, a lit farmhouse, a station name flashing past too fast to read, the black shoulders of mountains. At some point a border passes under you, and you sleep straight through it.

아침이 되면 승무원이 커피와 따뜻한 빵을 들고 문을 두드리고, 커튼을 올리면 완전히 새로운 세상이 펼쳐진다. 봉우리에는 눈이 쌓여 있고 골짜기에는 안개가 끼어 있으며, 소들은 어디로도 서둘러 가지 않는다. 수도에서 잠들었다가 알프스의 엽서 속에서 깨어난 셈이다. 공항도, 줄도, 잃어버린 짐도 없다. 그저 아주 좋은 엔진이 달린 침대 하나가 있을 뿐이다.

In the morning an attendant knocks with coffee and warm rolls, and you lift the blind on a completely new world. Snow on the peaks, mist in the valleys, cows that have clearly never hurried anywhere. You went to bed in a capital city and woke up inside a postcard of the Alps. No airport, no queue, no lost luggage. Just a bed with a very good engine.
