Quand les gens envoient un message dans un autre pays, le message passe souvent sous la mer. De longs câbles reposent au fond de l'océan. Ils relient les villes et les pays du monde entier.
Les câbles ne sont pas très gros. Beaucoup sont fins comme un tuyau de jardin. À l'intérieur, il y a de fins fils de verre, fins comme un cheveu. La lumière passe dans le verre très vite. Elle transporte l'information.
Ces câbles font un travail important. Ils portent environ quatre-vingt-quinze messages sur cent entre les pays. Il y a plus de six cents câbles dans la mer aujourd'hui. Ensemble, ils sont très, très longs. Ils traversent tous les océans de la Terre.
