The Hotel That Moves While You Sleep

There is a hotel where you fall asleep in one country and wake up in another. It is called a night train, and Europe is full of them. You board in the evening at a big city station, find your tiny cabin with its fold down bed and its little ladder, and somewhere around midnight the platform slides away behind you. Dare a friend to try this with you instead of a flight.

Există un hotel în care adormi într-o țară și te trezești în alta. Se numește tren de noapte, iar Europa este plină de asemenea trenuri. Urci seara, într-o gară dintr-un oraș mare, îți găsești cabina minusculă cu patul pliant și scărița ei, iar pe la miezul nopții peronul alunecă în urma ta. Provoacă un prieten să încerce asta cu tine în locul unui zbor.

Picture the scene. Your shoes are under the bed, your ticket is tucked into the pocket by the pillow, and the whole room rocks gently like a boat. Through the gap in the curtain you catch pieces of the night, a lit farmhouse, a station name flashing past too fast to read, the black shoulders of mountains. At some point a border passes under you, and you sleep straight through it.

Imaginează-ți scena. Pantofii tăi sunt sub pat, biletul este vârât în buzunarul de lângă pernă, iar toată camera se leagănă ușor, ca o barcă. Prin crăpătura perdelei prinzi fragmente din noapte: o fermă luminată, numele unei gări care trece prea repede ca să-l citești, umerii negri ai munților. La un moment dat, o frontieră trece pe sub tine, iar tu dormi liniștit peste ea.

In the morning an attendant knocks with coffee and warm rolls, and you lift the blind on a completely new world. Snow on the peaks, mist in the valleys, cows that have clearly never hurried anywhere. You went to bed in a capital city and woke up inside a postcard of the Alps. No airport, no queue, no lost luggage. Just a bed with a very good engine.

Dimineața, un însoțitor bate la ușă cu cafea și chifle calde, iar tu ridici storul spre o lume complet nouă. Zăpadă pe vârfuri, ceață în văi, vaci care în mod clar nu s-au grăbit niciodată nicăieri. Te-ai culcat într-o capitală și te-ai trezit într-o carte poștală din Alpi. Fără aeroport, fără coadă, fără bagaje pierdute. Doar un pat cu un motor foarte bun.
