Cesta lodí ke skalám je krátká. Skály jsou nízké a mokré. Ležela na nich spousta tuleňů. Nedělali nic.

Polly si vybrala velkého tuleně. „Kolik vás je v rodině?“ zeptala se. Dlouho přemýšlel. Všichni na téhle skále, řekl. A všichni na té vedlejší.

„Máte bratry nebo sestry?“ Skoro určitě, řekl. Nevěděl které. Na Orknejích se každý rok narodí asi dvacet dva tisíc tuleních mláďat.

Polly zkusila jednu větu. „Dnes chci trávit čas s rodinou.“ Znělo to tu divně. Pak zkusila: „I když žijeme daleko od sebe, pořád jsme spolu v kontaktu.“ To je blíž, řekl tuleň.
