Mara przyszła na nocny targ o siódmej. Ulica była pełna światła, pary i ludzi. Każde stoisko sprzedawało coś innego: makaron, pierogi, owoce na patyku, zimną herbatę. Była głodna, ale nie wiedziała, od czego zacząć.
Zatrzymała się przy stoisku z długą kolejką. Kobieta smażyła pierogi na dużej płaskiej patelni. Mara patrzyła na innych klientów. Wskazywali menu, mówili liczbę i płacili. Gdy przyszła jej kolej, ona też wskazała. "Poproszę pięć", powiedziała. Kobieta skinęła głową i uśmiechnęła się.
Pierogi były gorące i chrupiące na spodzie. Mara usiadła na małym plastikowym krześle i jadła powoli. Potem poszła do następnego stoiska, a potem do kolejnego. Tego wieczoru poznała najważniejszą zasadę jedzenia ulicznego: długa kolejka oznacza dobre jedzenie.
