وصلت مارا إلى السوق الليلي في الساعة السابعة. كان الشارع مليئا بالضوء والبخار والناس. كل كشك يبيع شيئا مختلفا: نودلز، وزلابية، وفاكهة على أعواد، وشاي بارد. كانت جائعة، لكنها لم تعرف من أين تبدأ.
توقفت عند كشك عليه طوابير طويلة. كانت امرأة تطبخ الزلابية في مقلاة كبيرة ومسطحة. شاهدت مارا الزبائن الآخرين. كانوا يشيرون إلى القائمة، ويقولون رقما، ثم يدفعون. حين جاء دورها، أشارت هي أيضا. قالت "خمسة، من فضلك". أومأت المرأة برأسها وابتسمت.
كانت الزلابية ساخنة ومقرمشة من الأسفل. جلست مارا على كرسي بلاستيكي صغير وأكلتها ببطء. ثم مشت إلى الكشك التالي، ثم الذي يليه. في تلك الليلة تعلمت مارا أهم قاعدة في طعام الشارع: الطابور الطويل يعني طعاما جيدا.
