Mara hét órakor érkezett az éjszakai piacra. Az utca tele volt fénnyel, gőzzel és emberekkel. Minden árus mást árult: tésztát, gombócot, gyümölcsöt nyárson, hideg teát. Éhes volt, de nem tudta, hol kezdje.
Megállt egy árusnál, ahol hosszú sor állt. Egy asszony gombócot sütött egy nagy, lapos serpenyőben. Mara figyelte a többi vásárlót. Rámutattak az étlapra, mondtak egy számot, és fizettek. Amikor rá került a sor, ő is rámutatott. "Ötöt kérek," mondta. Az asszony bólintott és mosolygott.
