치즈가 항상 이기는 경주

아무도 그 치즈를 잡은 적이 없어요. 경쟁심이 제일 강한 친구에게 이 이야기를 보내 보세요. 일 년에 한 번, 잉글랜드의 아주 가파른 잔디 언덕에서 누군가 커다란 치즈 덩어리를 비탈 아래로 굴리고, 사람들이 그 뒤를 쫓아 달려요.

Nobody has ever caught the cheese. Send this to your most competitive friend. Once a year, on a very steep grass hill in England, someone rolls a large wheel of cheese down the slope, and a crowd of people run after it.

언덕이 너무 가팔라서 대부분의 참가자는 제대로 서 있지도 못해요. 그들은 대부분 구르고, 넘어지고, 미끄러지며 내려가는데, 치즈는 그들 모두를 앞지를 만큼 빠르게 속도를 높여요. 먼저 바닥에 도착하는 사람이 이기는데, 치즈를 진짜로 잡는 일은 애초에 거의 불가능하기 때문이에요.

The hill is so steep that most runners cannot stay on their feet. They roll, tumble, and slide most of the way down, while the cheese picks up speed fast enough to outrun every single one of them. Whoever crosses the bottom first wins, since actually catching the cheese has never really been possible.

이 전통이 정확히 언제 시작되었는지는 아무도 몰라요. 다만 그 지역 사람들이 대략 이백 년 동안 이 일에 대해 글을 써 왔고, 아마 그보다 더 오래 실제로 해 왔을 거예요. 매년 다른 나라에서 온 새로운 참가자들이 그래도 한번 해 보려고 오고, 언덕은 매년 사람만큼이나 자주 이겨요.

Nobody knows exactly how the tradition began, only that people in the area have written about it for roughly two centuries and probably practiced it for longer. Every year, new runners from other countries arrive to try anyway, and every year, the hill wins as often as the humans do.
