The Bank That Lends Against Cheese

In the hills of northern Italy stands a bank that will accept, as loan collateral, nothing more exotic than cheese: wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano. Its vault holds more than half a million of them, each one still the property of the local dairy farmer who made it, held by the bank only until the loan is settled and the wheel finally sells.

În dealurile din nordul Italiei se află o bancă ce va accepta, drept garanție pentru un împrumut, nimic mai exotic decât brânză: roți de Parmigiano Reggiano. Seiful ei adăpostește mai mult de jumătate de milion de asemenea roți, fiecare fiind încă proprietatea fermierului local care a produs-o, păstrată de bancă doar până la achitarea împrumutului și vânzarea ei finală.

Rather than wait years for a wheel to age properly and eventually sell, a farmer can hand it straight to the bank against a loan, and the bank advances a large share of its eventual value straight away, well before the cheese has finished maturing.

În loc să aștepte ani întregi ca o roată să se maturizeze corespunzător și, în final, să se vândă, un fermier o poate preda direct băncii în schimbul unui împrumut, iar banca îi avansează imediat o mare parte din valoarea ei viitoare, cu mult înainte ca brânza să își termine maturarea.

For as long as the loan runs, the bank ages and stores the wheels itself, checking each one regularly and rotating it like the custodian of a vast lending library built out of cheese, moving the older wheels forward as they near the day they are ready to sell. Once the cheese finally sells at full price, the farmer settles the loan, and the whole system starts again with the next harvest.

Cât timp durează împrumutul, banca maturizează și depozitează roțile chiar ea, verificând fiecare dintre ele periodic și rotindu-le precum custodele unei vaste biblioteci de împrumut construite din brânză, mutând roțile mai vechi în față pe măsură ce se apropie ziua în care sunt gata de vânzare. Odată ce brânza se vinde în cele din urmă la preț întreg, fermierul achită împrumutul, iar întregul sistem o ia de la capăt cu următoarea recoltă.
