One Crater, Two Colors

From high in the sky, Polly looked down into one huge crater. It was more than twenty-two thousand years old and big enough to hold a small town and two lakes. A strip of land crossed the middle. On each side, the water was a different color: one lake blue, one lake green.

Högt uppe i luften såg Polly ner i en enorm krater. Den var mer än tjugotvåtusen år gammal och stor nog för en liten stad och två sjöar. En landremsa korsade mitten. På varje sida hade vattnet olika färg: en sjö blå, en sjö grön.

The two lakes are really one piece of water, joined by a channel under the land. But everything around them looks different. The blue lake is deeper and reflects the sky. The green lake sits near plants and tiny algae, which turn its color green.

De två sjöarna är egentligen ett och samma vatten, förbundna av en kanal under marken. Men allt omkring dem ser olika ut. Den blå sjön är djupare och speglar himlen. Den gröna sjön ligger nära växter och små alger, som gör färgen grön.

Polly flew low along the strip of land between the colors. She saw fishing boats on one side and cows on the hills above the other. Thick fog rolled in and covered first the green lake, then the blue one.

Polly flög lågt längs landremsan mellan färgerna. Hon såg fiskebåtar på ena sidan och kor på kullarna på den andra. Tjock dimma rullade in och täckte först den gröna sjön, sedan den blå.

She sat on an old stone wall and waited for the fog to clear. When it did, both lakes were still there, blue and green, just as before.

Hon satt på en gammal stenmur och väntade på att dimman skulle lätta. När den gjorde det låg båda sjöarna kvar, blå och grön, precis som förut.
