One Crater, Two Colors

From high in the sky, Polly looked down into one huge crater. It was more than twenty-two thousand years old and big enough to hold a small town and two lakes. A strip of land crossed the middle. On each side, the water was a different color: one lake blue, one lake green.

Bem alto no céu, Polly olhou para dentro de uma cratera enorme. Tinha mais de vinte e dois mil anos e era grande o suficiente para conter uma pequena vila e duas lagoas. Uma faixa de terra atravessava o meio. De cada lado, a água tinha uma cor diferente: uma lagoa azul, uma lagoa verde.

The two lakes are really one piece of water, joined by a channel under the land. But everything around them looks different. The blue lake is deeper and reflects the sky. The green lake sits near plants and tiny algae, which turn its color green.

As duas lagoas são na verdade uma só água, ligadas por um canal debaixo da terra. Mas tudo à volta delas é diferente. A lagoa azul é mais funda e reflete o céu. A lagoa verde fica perto de plantas e de algas minúsculas, que lhe dão a cor verde.

Polly flew low along the strip of land between the colors. She saw fishing boats on one side and cows on the hills above the other. Thick fog rolled in and covered first the green lake, then the blue one.

Polly voou baixo ao longo da faixa de terra entre as cores. Viu barcos de pesca de um lado e vacas nas colinas do outro. Um nevoeiro espesso entrou e cobriu primeiro a lagoa verde e depois a azul.

She sat on an old stone wall and waited for the fog to clear. When it did, both lakes were still there, blue and green, just as before.

Pousou num velho muro de pedra e esperou que o nevoeiro passasse. Quando passou, as duas lagoas continuavam lá, azul e verde, tal como antes.
