One Crater, Two Colors

From high in the sky, Polly looked down into one huge crater. It was more than twenty-two thousand years old and big enough to hold a small town and two lakes. A strip of land crossed the middle. On each side, the water was a different color: one lake blue, one lake green.

높은 하늘에서 폴리는 커다란 분화구 하나를 내려다보았다. 나이는 이만 이천 년이 넘었고, 작은 마을 하나와 호수 두 개가 들어갈 만큼 넓었다. 가운데를 땅줄기가 가로질렀다. 양쪽의 물빛이 달랐다. 한쪽 호수는 파랗고, 다른 쪽 호수는 초록이었다.

The two lakes are really one piece of water, joined by a channel under the land. But everything around them looks different. The blue lake is deeper and reflects the sky. The green lake sits near plants and tiny algae, which turn its color green.

두 호수는 사실 하나의 물이다. 땅 아래의 물길이 둘을 잇는다. 하지만 주변 풍경은 서로 다르다. 파란 호수는 더 깊어서 하늘을 비춘다. 초록 호수는 식물과 아주 작은 조류 가까이에 있어서 초록빛이 된다.

Polly flew low along the strip of land between the colors. She saw fishing boats on one side and cows on the hills above the other. Thick fog rolled in and covered first the green lake, then the blue one.

폴리는 두 색 사이의 땅줄기를 따라 낮게 날았다. 한쪽에는 고깃배가, 다른 쪽 언덕에는 소들이 보였다. 두꺼운 안개가 밀려와 먼저 초록 호수를, 그다음 파란 호수를 덮었다.

She sat on an old stone wall and waited for the fog to clear. When it did, both lakes were still there, blue and green, just as before.

폴리는 오래된 돌담에 앉아 안개가 걷히기를 기다렸다. 안개가 걷히자 두 호수는 그대로 있었다. 파랑과 초록, 전과 똑같았다.
