インターネットは海の底で生きている。「全部クラウドに入っているんだよ」なんて言う人がいたら、これを送ってあげてほしい。海を渡るメッセージのほとんどは、空を飛んでいるわけではない。冷たく暗い海底に横たわるケーブルの中を、魚やカニのそばを通って旅しているのだ。
そのケーブルは、思っているよりずっと細い。深い海のずっと先、ほとんど何も届かないような場所では、庭で使う水まきホースほどの太さしかないものもある。中にはガラスの細い糸が入っていて、その中を光が走り、写真や電話の声、映画、そして君が別の大陸に送るすべての言葉を運んでいる。
ケーブルは壊れることがある。サメのせいではない, , といっても、昔サメが一本かじってしまったことがあり、その話は今も語り継がれている。実際に多いのは、漁業の道具や重い船の錨が海底を引っかいてしまうことだ。世界のどこかで、年に百回以上も起きている。すると船が出動し、切れたケーブルを見つけて海底から引き上げ、ガラスの糸をつなぎ直し、また海に沈める。結局のところ、クラウドも船に乗れば、酔ってしまうというわけだ。
