崖の上の町

ポリーはコルシカ島の海岸にそって、南へ飛びます。すると、島が終わります。前には海しかありません。遠くに、ほかの島が見えます。

Polly flies south along the coast of Corsica. Then the island ends. In front of her there is only sea. Far away she can see another island.

ポリーはふり向いて、町を見ます。町は高くて白い崖の上にあります。家は高くて細いです。家は崖のすぐ端に立っています。その下で、崖は海まで深く落ちています。

Polly turns and sees a town. The town stands on a high white cliff. The houses are tall and narrow. They stand right at the edge. Below them the cliff falls a long way down to the sea.

ポリーは古い城壁に降りて、下を見ます。岩は白くて、かわいています。ポリーの下をカモメが飛んでいます。そのとき、ポリーはふしぎなものを見ます。崖に細い線があります。その線の中に、階段があります。

Polly lands on the old town wall and looks down. The rock is white and dry. Gulls fly below her. Then she sees something strange. There is a narrow line cut into the cliff. Inside the line there are steps.

階段は暗いところへ下りていきます。ポリーには階段の終わりが見えません。ポリーはあそこへ降りていきます。

The steps go down into the dark. Polly cannot see the end of them. Polly will go down there.
