Two Species Nobody Had Named, Found on a Cliff Face

Scientists have identified two animals never before named. In the mountains of Montenegro, researchers combing limestone cliffs came across two minuscule snails that turned out, on inspection, to be new to science.

Επιστήμονες εντόπισαν δύο ζώα που ποτέ πριν δεν είχαν ονομαστεί. Στα βουνά του Μαυροβουνίου, ερευνητές που χτένιζαν ασβεστολιθικούς γκρεμούς έπεσαν πάνω σε δύο μικροσκοπικά σαλιγκάρια που αποδείχτηκαν, μετά από εξέταση, νέα για την επιστήμη.

Each snail measures roughly the width of a fingernail and carries a small, cone-shaped shell built for a life spent wedged into narrow cracks in the rock. Rather than a simple flap, each one has a round disk on its tail that functions like a tiny door, sealing the shell shut the instant the animal withdraws inside. One of the two species survives only within a single narrow canyon that a planned dam could submerge before researchers finish cataloguing whatever else lives there, unseen, on the same cliffs.

Κάθε σαλιγκάρι έχει περίπου το πλάτος ενός νυχιού και φέρει ένα μικρό, κωνικό κέλυφος φτιαγμένο για μια ζωή στριμωγμένη μέσα σε στενές χαραμάδες του βράχου. Αντί για ένα απλό πτερύγιο, το καθένα έχει έναν στρογγυλό δίσκο στην ουρά του που λειτουργεί σαν μικροσκοπική πόρτα, σφραγίζοντας το κέλυφος τη στιγμή που το ζώο αποσύρεται μέσα. Ένα από τα δύο είδη επιβιώνει μόνο μέσα σε ένα και μοναδικό στενό φαράγγι που ένα σχεδιαζόμενο φράγμα θα μπορούσε να βυθίσει προτού οι ερευνητές προλάβουν να καταγράψουν ό,τι άλλο ζει, αθέατο, στους ίδιους βράχους.

The team named the two snails after the very places where they were found: one after the canyon itself, the other after a nearby high plateau. Researchers note that the discovery shows how, even in well-mapped corners of Europe, whole species can still be waiting, unnamed, on a single cliff face.

Η ομάδα ονόμασε τα δύο σαλιγκάρια από τα ίδια τα μέρη όπου βρέθηκαν: το ένα από το ίδιο το φαράγγι, το άλλο από ένα κοντινό υψίπεδο. Οι ερευνητές σημειώνουν ότι η ανακάλυψη δείχνει πως, ακόμα και σε καλά χαρτογραφημένες γωνιές της Ευρώπης, ολόκληρα είδη μπορούν ακόμα να περιμένουν, ανώνυμα, πάνω σε έναν και μόνο βράχο.
