Steam and Small Plates

Mara arrived at the night market at seven. The street was full of light, steam, and people. Every stand sold something different: noodles, dumplings, fruit on sticks, cold tea. She was hungry, but she did not know where to start.

Mara a ajuns la piața de noapte la ora șapte. Strada era plină de lumini, abur și oameni. Fiecare tarabă vindea altceva: tăiței, găluște, fructe pe bețe, ceai rece. Îi era foame, dar nu știa de unde să înceapă.

She stopped at a stand with long lines. A woman cooked dumplings in a big flat pan. Mara watched the other customers. They pointed at the menu, said a number, and paid. When it was her turn, she pointed too. "Five, please," she said. The woman nodded and smiled.

S-a oprit la o tarabă cu cozi lungi. O femeie gătea găluște într-o tigaie mare și plată. Mara i-a privit pe ceilalți clienți. Ei arătau spre meniu, spuneau un număr și plăteau. Când i-a venit rândul, a arătat și ea. "Cinci, vă rog," a spus ea. Femeia a dat din cap și a zâmbit.

The dumplings were hot and crispy on the bottom. Mara sat on a small plastic chair and ate them slowly. Then she walked to the next stand, and the next. That night she learned the most important rule of street food: a long line means good food.

Găluștele erau fierbinți și crocante la bază. Mara s-a așezat pe un scăunel de plastic și le-a mâncat încet. Apoi a mers la următoarea tarabă, și la următoarea. În noaptea aceea a învățat cea mai importantă regulă a mâncării stradale: o coadă lungă înseamnă mâncare bună.
