El suelo bajo el valle tiene muchos huecos y túneles en la roca. En otoño, el agua baja por estos huecos hasta que el valle queda seco. En invierno, la lluvia y la nieve derretida suben por los mismos huecos, y el lago se llena otra vez, a veces en solo unos días.
Cuando el agua está alta, la gente rema en botes y mira pájaros en el lago. Cuando el agua está baja, los agricultores caminan y cortan heno en el mismo suelo. Escritores antiguos hablaron de este lago extraño hace dos mil años, y todavía confunde a los visitantes hoy.
