손톱만 한 완전히 새로운 동물 두 종

과학자들이 지금까지 아무도 이름을 붙이지 않았던 동물 두 종을 방금 발견했다. 지구의 모든 종이 이미 발견되었다고 생각하는 친구를 소환해 보라. 몬테네그로의 산에서 석회암 절벽을 조사하던 연구자들은 완전히 새로운 종으로 밝혀진 아주 작은 달팽이 두 마리를 발견했다.

Scientists just discovered two animals nobody had ever named. Tag a friend who thinks every species on Earth has already been found. In the mountains of Montenegro, researchers searching limestone cliffs found two tiny snails that turned out to be completely new to science.

각 달팽이는 손톱 너비 정도의 크기이며 작은 원뿔 모양 껍데기를 가지고 있다. 단순한 막 대신, 각 달팽이는 꼬리 부분에 문처럼 작동하는 둥근 원반이 있어서, 달팽이가 안으로 들어가는 순간 껍데기를 꽉 막아 준다. 두 종 가운데 하나는 좁은 협곡에서만 사는데, 그 협곡은 계획된 댐이 건설되면 과학자들이 그곳에 사는 다른 생물을 다 연구하기도 전에 물에 잠길 수 있다.

Each snail measures about the width of a fingernail and carries a small cone-shaped shell. Instead of a simple flap, each one has a round disk on its tail that works like a door, sealing the shell shut the moment the snail pulls inside. One of the two species lives only in a narrow canyon that a planned dam could flood before scientists finish studying what else lives there.

연구팀은 발견된 장소의 이름을 따서 달팽이들에게 이름을 붙였는데, 하나는 그 협곡의 이름을, 다른 하나는 근처의 높은 고원의 이름을 땄다. 연구자들은 이 발견이 지도가 잘 만들어진 유럽 지역에서도 여전히 단 하나의 절벽 위에 이름 없이 남아 있는 종이 있을 수 있음을 보여 준다고 말한다.

The team named the snails after the places where they were found, one after the canyon and one after a high plateau nearby. Researchers say the discovery shows that even in well-mapped parts of Europe, whole species can still be waiting, unnamed, on a single cliff.
