爪ほどの大きさの、新種の動物二種

科学者たちが、誰も名前を付けたことのない動物を二種、発見したばかりだ。地球上の種はもう全部発見されていると思っている友達にタグ付けしよう。モンテネグロの山中で、石灰岩の崖を調べていた研究者たちが、科学的にまったく新しいと判明した二種の小さなカタツムリを見つけた。

Scientists just discovered two animals nobody had ever named. Tag a friend who thinks every species on Earth has already been found. In the mountains of Montenegro, researchers searching limestone cliffs found two tiny snails that turned out to be completely new to science.

どちらのカタツムリも爪ほどの幅しかなく、小さな円錐形の殻を持つ。単純なふたの代わりに、尾に丸い円盤があり、これがドアのように働いて、カタツムリが殻の中に引っ込んだ瞬間にぴったりと閉じる。二種のうち一種は、狭い峡谷にしか生息しておらず、科学者たちがそこに他に何が生きているかを調べ終える前に、建設予定のダムがその峡谷を水没させてしまう可能性がある。

Each snail measures about the width of a fingernail and carries a small cone-shaped shell. Instead of a simple flap, each one has a round disk on its tail that works like a door, sealing the shell shut the moment the snail pulls inside. One of the two species lives only in a narrow canyon that a planned dam could flood before scientists finish studying what else lives there.

研究チームは、見つかった場所にちなんでカタツムリに名前を付けた。一種は峡谷の名前から、もう一種は近くにある高原の名前からだ。研究者たちによると、この発見は、地図が詳しく作られているヨーロッパの地域でさえ、まだ名前のない種がひとつの崖の上で見つかるのを待っていることがある、ということを示しているという。

The team named the snails after the places where they were found, one after the canyon and one after a high plateau nearby. Researchers say the discovery shows that even in well-mapped parts of Europe, whole species can still be waiting, unnamed, on a single cliff.
