긴 비단길

옛날에 상인들은 아시아를 가로질러 아주 먼 길을 갔어요. 사람들은 이 오래된 길을 실크로드라고 불러요. 실크로드는 중국에서 유럽까지 이어졌어요. 높은 산과 건조한 사막을 지나갔어요. 그 길은 전부 육천 킬로미터가 넘었어요.

Long ago, traders made a very long journey across Asia. People call this old route the Silk Road. It went from China all the way to Europe, across high mountains and dry deserts. The whole road was more than six thousand kilometres long.

상인들은 중국의 비단을 낙타와 말 등에 싣고 갔어요. 그들은 차와 향신료, 아름다운 돌도 팔았어요. 돌아올 때는 유리와 말, 금을 중국으로 가져왔어요. 여행은 느리고 힘들었어요. 여러 달이 걸리기도 했어요.

Merchants carried silk from China on the backs of camels and horses. They also sold tea, spices, and beautiful stones. On the way back, they brought glass, horses, and gold to China. The trip was slow and hard, and it could take many months.

실크로드는 물건만 옮기지 않았어요. 생각과 예술, 새로운 말도 동양과 서양 사이에 옮겼어요. 로마 사람들은 비단을 좋아했어요. 하지만 비단이 어떻게 만들어지는지 몰랐어요. 어떤 사람들은 비단이 나뭇잎처럼 나무에서 자란다고 생각했어요.

The Silk Road moved more than goods. It also moved ideas, art, and new words between East and West. People in Rome loved silk, but they did not know how it was made. Some of them even thought that silk grew on trees like leaves.
