منذ زمن بعيد، قام التجار برحلة طويلة جدا عبر آسيا. يسمي الناس هذا الطريق القديم طريق الحرير. امتد من الصين إلى أوروبا، عبر جبال عالية وصحارى جافة. كان الطريق كله أطول من ستة آلاف كيلومتر.
حمل التجار الحرير من الصين على ظهور الجمال والخيول. وباعوا أيضا الشاي والتوابل والأحجار الجميلة. وفي طريق العودة، جلبوا الزجاج والخيول والذهب إلى الصين. كانت الرحلة بطيئة وصعبة، وقد تستغرق أشهرا عديدة.
لم ينقل طريق الحرير البضائع فقط. بل نقل أيضا الأفكار والفن وكلمات جديدة بين الشرق والغرب. أحب أهل روما الحرير، لكنهم لم يعرفوا كيف يُصنع. بل ظن بعضهم أن الحرير ينمو على الأشجار مثل الأوراق.
