In Tokyo, the trains stop around midnight. Tomas learns this five minutes too late, and discovers where the city sleeps when it misses the way home.

Tomas s-a uitat la telefon și a simțit că i se strânge stomacul. Era douăsprezece și zece noaptea, iar porțile stației se închideau. La Tokyo, trenurile nu circulă toată noaptea. Ultimul tren de pe majoritatea liniilor pleacă în jurul miezului nopții, iar toată lumea din oraș știe exact ora trenului ei. Tomas, care era în țară de patru zile, nu știa.
Un taxi prin oraș ar fi costat mai mult decât camera lui de hotel. Un angajat al stației i-a văzut fața și i-a arătat spre capătul străzii. Acolo, între un magazin non-stop și o tarabă de tăiței, strălucea un semn pentru un hotel capsulă. Tomas a plătit la un automat, a luat o cheie de dulap și a dormit într-un cocon curat de plastic, de mărimea unui pat simplu, într-o cameră liniștită plină de alți oameni care pierduseră și ei trenul.
Dimineața a cumpărat cafea de la un automat și a luat primul tren spre casă, odihnit și puțin mândru. Acum verifică un singur lucru înainte de orice seară petrecută în oraș în Japonia: nu meniul, nu harta, ci ora ultimului tren.
