厄介なのはここからだ。宇宙にある時計は、あなたの腕時計と同じ速さでは進まない。地球という巨大な質量から離れたところでは、時間は少しだけ速く進む。一方で、猛スピードで軌道を回っていることは、逆に時間を少し遅らせる。この二つの効果は打ち消し合わず、結果として衛星の時計は一日におよそ3800万分の1秒ずつ進みすぎてしまう。
