The Bird Twice Given Up For Lost

In the east of the island, Polly flew into an old forest. Moss covered the trees. Little sunlight reached the ground. A small grey and pink bird lives only here. Its name is the priolo.

Na vzhodu otoka je Polly odletela v star gozd. Mah je pokrival drevesa. Do tal je prišlo malo sonca. Majhna siva in rožnata ptica živi samo tukaj. Ime ji je priolo.

The bird almost disappeared. People saw none after nineteen thirty-two. Then in nineteen sixty-seven, people found some again. But farms kept taking its home. Soon fewer than one hundred pairs were left. It is one of Europe's rarest birds.

Ptica je skoraj izginila. Po letu tisoč devetsto dvaintrideset je ljudje niso več videli. Potem so jo leta tisoč devetsto sedeminšestdeset spet našli. A kmetije so ji jemale dom. Kmalu je ostalo manj kot sto parov. Je ena najredkejših ptic v Evropi.

People worked hard to help it. They planted the right trees again. Polly saw two priolos fly by. Their breasts flashed soft pink.

Ljudje so se močno trudili, da bi ji pomagali. Spet so posadili prava drevesa. Polly je videla dva priola, kako sta odletela mimo. Njune prsi so bile nežno rožnate.

Polly stayed still. The forest grew still again. It felt like a good trade: quiet, for a bird that still lives.

Polly je mirno počakala. Gozd je spet potihnil. Zdelo se je kot dobra menjava: tišina za ptico, ki še živi.
