Kraj malog jezera Polly je vidjela velike lonce pokraj dubokih rupa. Kuhar je užetom stavio lonac u svaku rupu. Polly je gledala.

U svakom su loncu bili meso i povrće. Zemlja ispod vruća je od vulkana. Nema vatre. Hranu kuha samo toplina zemlje.

Lonci ostaju u zemlji šest ili sedam sati. Ljudi u međuvremenu idu u šetnju. Zatim se vrate na večeru.

Kad se prvi lonac otvorio, izašla je para. Mirisalo je jako dobro. Polly je gledala kako ga kuhar sretno odnosi.
